Exercise is an obvious and extremely important part of everybody's health. However, these days more and more people are increasingly inactive, as technology means that we don't have to move as much to do certain tasks or get around. Technology also means there are more distractions indoors, such as computers and video games that keep us inside more often, for longer.
So, how can you combat this as a family?
Exercising together is a great way to spend some quality time as a family, while also making sure you are getting regular physical activity and all the health benefits that come along with it. Why not schedule some time in during the week when everyone knows you will be getting together? Whether it's an hour a day during weekends or more regularly throughout the week, setting a schedule will help it to be taken seriously. You can mix up the activities, too. One day you might play a game of backyard cricket, head down to the park to run around and play or embark on a waterfront walk or forest hike. It can even be as simple as kicking around a ball, having fun with a skipping rope or dancing to some of your family's favourite music.
Better still, why not turn family occasions, such as birthdays or anniversaries, into active events. A picnic at the park is a great opportunity to run around, throw around a Frisbee, climb trees and play catch. A trip to a beach is a great opportunity for swimming, beach cricket and running in the sands. You'll be surprised at how many opportunities you can find to get moving once you start looking.
Remember, it's important you complement your physical activity with a healthy diet, full of vitamins, minerals and nutrients to support immune health and strong bones and muscles.
