7 smoothie recipes for better health

Enjoying smoothies is a great and delicious way to help you get through the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. They're quick and couldn't be easier to make. There are literally hundreds of smoothie recipes out there but we thought we would share some of our favorites. All you need is a blender and the ingredients and away you go.

Banana crunch breakfast smoothie

What you'll need

  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup milk (nonfat or low fat  is okay)
  • 2 Tbs. honey or sugar-free honey substitute
  • 1/2 cup granola, oats or Special K cereal
  • 1/2 cup ice

Serves 1

Fruit and muesli breakfast smoothie

What you'll need

  • 1½ cups low-fat soy milk
  • 2 tbs low-fat natural or vanilla yoghurt
  • 1 banana
  • ¼ cup chopped berries: strawberries, raspberries, blueberries
  • 1-2 tbs muesli
  • ½ cup iced water

Serves 1 - 2

Fruity smoothie

What you'll need

  • 1 ripe pear
  • 1 ripe peach
  • 1/2 cup raspberries
  • 1 cup apple juice

Apricot smoothie

What you'll need

  • 1 cup canned apricot halves in light syrup
  • 6 ice cubes
  • 1 cup nonfat plain yogurt
  • 3 tbs sugar

Banana coffee smoothie

What you'll need

  • 2 small frozen bananas
  • 1 1/2 cups low fat milk
  • 250g low-fat coffee yogurt
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Dash nutmeg

Papaya and kiwi smoothie

What you'll need

  • 1 cup vanilla soy milk or almond milk
  • 1 cup papaya
  • 1 peeled kiwi fruit
  • 1/2 tsp. honey
  • Dash cinnamon
  • 2-4 ice cubes

Peanut butter banana smoothie

What you'll need

  • 1 bananas, broken into chunks
  • 235ml milk
  • 65g peanut butter
  • 15ml honey, or to taste
  • 26-8 ice cubes

Smoothie tips

  • If you're watching your weight, opt for low fat yogurt and low fat or skimmed milk.
  • Artificial sweeteners offer a low calorie alternative to sugar and honey if you’re counting the calories. But our advice is to use natural sugar and honey where possible and just keep an eye on the quantity!
  • Add seeds to your smoothie for an extra health boost.
  • Don’t be afraid to play around with your smoothie and experiment with ingredients.
