Signs and symptoms of low immunity

A healthy immune system is essential for overall well-being and to ensure that we stay free of illness. However, our busy modern lives are full of things that may lower our immunity, such as stress, poor diet, lack of sleep and working long hours. We often hear about the negative impacts these factors may have on our immune systems, but how can you tell if your immune system is struggling and may need a bit of help? Below are some common signs and symptoms of a low immune system.

What does a lowered immune system look like?

A weakened immune system has an effect on the whole body. Symptoms can be mild or severe, depending on the person and how weak his or her immune system is. Signs and symptoms of low immunity include frequent or recurrent illnesses, such as colds and flu. People with lowered immune systems may also find that wounds take a long time to heal.1

Tips to help you improve a reduced immune system

A few small changes to your everyday lifestyle may go a long way to improving immunity. Try to reduce your stress levels2 as much as possible, and make sure you get enough sleep.3 Kick the smoking habit if you haven’t already4 and avoid excessive alcohol consumption (three or more drinks a day).5 All of these factors and habits can deplete your immune system even further. What you eat is extremely important for overall health and immunity too, so remember to stay hydrated with plenty of water6 and increase your daily intake of fruit and veggies.7

How to tell if your immune system is improving

After you’ve spent some time changing to an immune system‐friendly diet and lifestyle, you should start noticing some positive benefits. Firstly, little bumps and scratches are more likely to heal faster than when your immune system was poor and you were feeling run down. Secondly, you’re less likely to come down with every cold and flu doing the rounds at school or work, which means you’ll have plenty of time to get on with good stuff!
